Dr. Podolin's Endocrine Exam Essay # 2
Warning...I did this quickly and it may be incomplete
Compare a fed vs. fasted state in terms of which hormones (insulin, glucagons, cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone) and which metabolic pathways (glycogen synthesis, glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, lipogenesis, protein synthesis, protein breakdown) predominate. Be sure to include at least one tissue in which the pathway occurs.
Fed State = After you have eaten (High Glucose)
Predominant hormone - Insulin
Predominant tissue - Liver
Some in muscle too
Predominant pathway - Glycogen Synthesis
Converts glucose into glycogen for storage
Also inhibits glycogenolysis
Fasted State = Low Glucose
Predominant hormone - Glucagon
Also some Growth hormone and cortisol
Predominant tissue - Liver
Predominant pathway - Glycogenolysis
In the liver and muscle
Also glyconeogenesis
In the liver and kidney
