Use of Diuretics in Renal Physiology

(Ch. 10, Koeppen and Stanton)

Understand the pathophysiology of edema.

Understand the basic mechanism of action of the five major classes of diuretics that are used clinically.

Be able to explain why thiazides and loop diuretics have the effects that they do on potassium and calcium.

Be aware of the physiological mechanism that underlies the ability of potassium-sparing diuretics to produce a hyperkalemia.

Be able to identify the site of action in the nephron for the loop, thiazide, and potassium-sparing diuretics, as well as the carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, and the specific transporters involved.

Have some knowledge of which clinical situations are the most appropriate for which diuretics.
