used to think that the way to be a Christian was to try hard to live a good life, and that if I had any time left over to read the Bible and pray a little bit, it would make God feel good! It wasn't until much later I discovered that the relationship with God is the entire basis of the Christian life. That's where it's all at. It is not an option. It is not something that we can choose to take or leave. It is the entire basis of the Christian life. And not until I realize and accept that premise am I going to do everything in my power, by God's grace, to find a meaningful communication with God. There is going to be no such thing as your having a relationship with God and your knowing God unless you spend time together. It's just that simple. My dad used to tell the story of the man who trained his horse not to eat. It was more economical that way. But just when he got him trained, the horse died. Of course, this was the logical conclusion. I might be able to go along living on the "camel's hump" for a period of time, but if I do not eat physically, sooner or later I'll end up in a little heap on the sidewalk and that will be the end of it. The person who has experienced the joy of coming to Christ and who has become a Christian may be able to go for a little while without taking time to feed his soul, but sooner or later he's going to end up spiritually in a pitiful little heap on the sidewalk. When we study the life of Jesus, you find that often He was in communion with His Father. The early morning or the evening hours would be spent in prayer, that He might gain power for His work. If it was necessary for Christ, how much more necessary it must be for us to spend time with God
